Defining Religious Liberty Down
It may seem strange that anyone could look around the pornography-saturated, fertility-challenged, family-breakdown-plagued West and see a society menaced by a repressive puritanism. But it’s clear that this perspective is widely and sincerely held.
It would be refreshing, though, if it were expressed honestly, without the “of course we respect religious freedom” facade.
If you want to fine Catholic hospitals for following Catholic teaching, or prevent Jewish parents from circumcising their sons, or ban Chick-fil-A in Boston, then don’t tell religious people that you respect our freedoms. Say what you really think: that the exercise of our religion threatens all that’s good and decent, and that you’re going to use the levers of power to bend us to your will.
There, didn’t that feel better? Now we can get on with the fight.

Oh, I think that puritanism is rife today, it’s just that sexual puritanism is dead, buried and replaced with a sexual libertinism. The puritanism is now being applied in other areas like tras-fat bans, soda size restrictions, smoking bans, salt bans, recycling mandates, foie gras bans and a host of restrictions on innocuous, personal behavior.
Remember, as Thomas Macaulay said, “The puritan hated bear baiting, not because it gave pain to the bear, but because it gave pleasure to the spectators.” If you like your Mt. Dew Big Gulp, you’re loathed by the elites for the same reason.

Yes! I feel much better!!
Jeffersonian, Agreed. The new ‘repression’ of thought takes a different form these days just like you pointed out in your comment. Alas, the left will NEVER allow religious liberty if it interferes with their agenda which of course trumps all other freedoms/rights/responsibilities.

They’ll call it “civil rights,” SCBCL which, as we all know, trump actual human rights.
“After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated
rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and
stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd.” - Alexis de Tocqueville

Sigh
Yes, I agree Jeffersonian. I have actually heard people say that the Civil Rights activism by Episcopal priests was what brought them into the Episcopal Church. *gasp* sigh…...
Wonderful quote from Alexis de Tocqueville. Is this the first instance of the idea of “sheeple”? Then again maybe sheep are not timid and industrious animals?

Greg,
Your cogent comment makes me feel better too! And after I eat breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner at Chik Fil A on the 1st (yes, they do have healthy choices, in addition to those yummy nuggets and the brownie) my condition will continue to improve.
