Finding Compliments Where you Can
The United Church of Christ is the only mainline denomination that has been in steeper decline over the last several decades than the Episcopal Church. It is rapidly becoming a religio-political club for far leftists to gather together and thank Someone that they are not as others are (evangelicals, conservatives, Republicans, businesspeople, homeschoolers, breeders, homophobes, etc.). Given its irrelevance to pretty much anyone outside the club, it’s not surprising that the leadership would go looking for positive strokes anywhere they can find them. According to UCC News:
‘A Salute to the United Church of Christ’ is the subject of the latest blog post of Bishop John Shelby Spong, a retired bishop of the Episcopal Church, based in Newark, N.J. In the current entry on his website, A New Christianity for a New World, Spong, 81, praised the UCC for its mettle and thanked the denomination’s leadership for its insight.
“Perhaps, I thought, this church can be the one Christian denomination that will inspire, bring about and participate in the necessary reformation required to break the Christian faith out of its dying patterns, [it’s] no longer believable theological understandings and its medieval worship practices,” Spong wrote.
Spong, an author of 22 books that have sold more than a million copies, visited four UCC churches in Wichita, Kan. (Plymouth UCC), Greely, Colo. (First Congregational UCC), Norman, Okla. (Mayflower UCC) and Hendersonville, N.C. (First Congregational UCC) and said afterward his “appreciation for this denomination soared.”
Spong ended his blog with the following:
“These four churches I have described so briefly had several things in common. They each had a well-trained and well-educated senior pastor. Each was linked to a national denomination that encouraged them to press the edges. Each had drunk deeply of that denomination’s courage in the public arena on the right side of the cultural issues of our day.
“So to these churches and to the leadership of the National United Church of Christ, I first raise my hand in salute for your courage and your dedication. Second, I stand before you in awe for what you have meant in my life and in the life of Christianity itself. Third, I bow my head and my heart in thanksgiving for your witness to the Truth.”
Getting pats on the back for your theological and ecclesiastical acumen from Spong is like getting accolades from the president of the Flat Earth Society on your scientific abilities. It says volumes about the state of the UCC that they would trumpet this as if it somehow vindicates all they’ve done to destroy a once-vital denomination.

It is remarkable how much current “prophetic wisdom” is oriented toward bringing the church into agreement with the enlightened judgment of our society and how much Bible prophecy was focused on orienting society toward Godly wisdom.

Took a parables Bible class at UCC years ago, it was actually a good class, run by a lay person. Never got a sense of the church. I was still whistling in the wind in those days, believing I was with a real Christian church, couldn’t quite shake the feeling that something was really wrong at my own TEC, wouldn’t have understood any problem if it hit me in the face at UCC. The local UCC church is dwindling, buried an aunt there, more like a ladies club, nothing wrong with ladies clubs, but no real message, no Bible. Pews are half empty. It won’t be long.

Spong charges $29.95 a year for his comments. He plans a book on (the Gospel according to St.) John in late 2013 - a “mystical interpretation.” He says it is basically fiction.
