United Church of Canada Gives In to Temptation

The United Church of Canada today plunged head-first into the mire occupied primarily by anti-Semites and far left Israel-haters. According to the UCC web site:

On August 15, 2012, General Council affirmed 12 recommendations that call for an end to violence and incitement to hatred by both Palestinians and Israelis in the disputed territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza. The recommendations also call for identifying products from the settlements and boycotting them.

The final empowering motion to formally adopt the recommendations and direct United Church policies and actions in relation to Israel and Palestine will come back before General Council on Friday, August 17, said Bruce Gregersen, General Council Officer for Programs, after the meeting.

“We are in a lengthy process of a very important piece of work and we will come back to it on Friday,” he said.

He said the mind of General Council seems to support the adoption of recommendations that include identifying the settlements in the West Bank as a primary cause of injustice in the region and a boycott of products from those settlements.

The UCC’s General Council web site is a mess, so it’s hard to say whether items passed in exactly the form they were presented in, or whether what will be voted on Friday is the same thing as I’ve previously written about. That will probably be clearer on Friday, so I’ll have more about it then.

And Jesus wept.  Statmann

Here’s my favorite part,”“We are in a lengthy process of a very important piece of work…”.  Their capacity for self-delusion seems unlimited.  It seems this is more about their feelings than it is about anything that is going to make a lick of difference in Israel or Palestine.  They can go home and laud their “triumph” and life will go on unchanged on the West Bank.

#2: Absolutely correct. In fact, virtually everything the mainline churches do when it comes to public policy issues is nothing more than playing Model Congress or Model UN. It might make them feel good, but it makes no difference whatsoever in the real world (not that the real world matters to them, since they are pretty much exclusively concerned about what goes on between their ears).

Okay, so what products do they want us to boycott? Here is a list from Meretz USA which supports boycotting things from the settlements. It looks like Kosher wines will be the main target for the boycott. I would guess that the members of the United Church of Canada’s boycott of Kosher wines will not adversely affect sales at all.

The lunacy doesn’t end there.  The UCC (Untied Church of Canada, yes, I meant ‘untied’) also elected their first openly gay moderator.  See http://www.ottawacitizen.com/life/United+Church+Canada+elects+first+openly+moderator/7103162/story.html
