Wednesday Afternoon Palate Cleanser: “Old School” Basketball
Of course, the joke in this video is that the “old school Uncle Drew” is actually Cavs Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving.
The larger pretense was that they were filming a documentary of another basketball player [in on the joke] and he brought along “Uncle Drew” who enters the pickup game.
Besides the good fun of watch Uncle Drew eventually dunk on some good young amateurs, what I especially appreciated was the overwhelmingly superior quickness and ball handling skills of a professional, as opposed to people who just love to play hoops. There’s no comparison—and along about the 2.20 mark, viewers recognize that.

Yeah, but neither the pro ringer nor the amateurs could pull off hoops magic like this.

A well-done hustle!
The “Uncle Drew” opponent for me as a “twentysomething” was no fake, a 60+ Baptist pastor who was a consummate handball player and could have taught my college instructor a thing or two about the game. He owned the dominating position on the court and kept me chasing the ball well beyond even the dream of challenging him for that spot. With 40 years on me I think he hardly broke a sweat. Old age and treachery may beat youth and skill, but youth and enthusiasm are definitely no match for old age and skill.
BTW according to Google Maps this video was shot roughly a mile north of my father’s last place of work. He was a starter on the West Orange (NJ) High School basketball team, class of 1920, at a towering 5’2”.
