Don’t Point That Finger At Me, It Might Be Loaded
If you ever needed proof that it takes no common sense whatsoever to be an administrator in a government school, KOLN-TV in Nebraska is happy to oblige:
Hunter Spanjer says his name with a certain special hand gesture, but at just three and a half years old, he may have to change it.
“He’s deaf, and his name sign, they say, is a violation of their weapons policy,” explained Hunter’s father, Brian Spanjer.
Grand Island’s “Weapons in Schools” Board Policy 8470 forbids “any instrument…that looks like a weapon,” But a three year-old’s hands?
“Anybody that I have talked to thinks this is absolutely ridiculous. This is not threatening in any way,” said Hunter’s grandmother Janet Logue.
“It’s a symbol. It’s an actual sign, a registered sign, through S.E.E.,” Brian Spanjer said.
S.E.E. stands for Signing Exact English, Hunter’s sign language. Hunter’s name gesture is modified with crossed-fingers to show it is uniquely his own.
“We are working with the parents to come to the best solution we can for the child,” said Jack Sheard, Grand Island Public Schools spokesperson.
That’s just about all GIPS officials will say for now.
Meantime, Hunter’s parents say that by Monday, lawyers from the National Association of the Deaf are likely to weigh in for Hunter’s right to sign his own name.
Here’s a picture of the offensive gesture:

Me, I could think of some offensive gestures to direct toward those who, having desired to be in administration, are clearly too dumb to be trusted with it.

I can finger spell and I know a little sign language. If you spell out Hunter’s name, the H, the U and the R all resemble guns. You’re right, this is idiotic.

Look at it this way, David: Little Hunter is learning at a tender young age what sort of idiots rule us. It takes most of us into our 20s or 30s to get the sort of education this kid’s getting as a pre-K’er.

The follow-on link at list affirms the school board made the right decision. He does not have to change the way he signs his name. The senseless part is that there even needed to be a discussion about the issue.

I wonder if their policy (thank God they dropped it in this case) might have been in violation of Federal law when it comes to special needs and disabilities. They are supposed to create an environment conducive the the child getting an education - messing up his sign language is pretty much like “putting stumbling blocks in the path of the blind.”
