Free Speech, as Only the Loony Left Understands It
LifeNews has a terrific story that graphically illustrates the deep and abiding respect some liberals have for free speech. They may not be rioting in the streets or killing people to stifle speech they don’t like, but defacing property–that will do just fine:
The tolerant San Francisco liberals are at it again, honoring free speech and celebrating diversity by trashing a pro-life billboard featuring a black father and his baby.
The liberal San Francisco Weekly has more:
As first spotted by Bernalwood, some “hackers” saw this political billboard on Cortland Avenue and decided it was in need of a major redesign. Have a look:
![]()
Horrible, right? Heaven forfend someone challenge the reigning pro-death orthodoxy in the city by the bay. So the some right (oops, make that left)-thinking goons went to work and produced this:
![]()
So the billboard company, CBS Outdoor, replaced the defaced ad with a new one, reproducing the original. Once again, can’t have any of that breeder propaganda cluttering up their fair city, so the thugs had another go at it:
![]()
This, of course, is on top of the property defacement by MSNBC contributor Mona Eltahawy, who took a can of spray paint to a poster at a New York City subway station that had been placed there because a court ordered to be as a matter of free speech. Eltahawy, who apparently objects to others calling people who blow up civilians, including children, “savages” (she would no doubt style them “freedom fighters”) is met with resistance to her attempt to silence the author of the poster, and starts belting out the circa-1968 cliches:
I kept waiting for her to scream out, “Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help! Help! I’m being repressed!” but she apparently is not a fan of Monty Python.
This is the regime upon which certain segments of the left and the radical Islamists who would cut their throats apparently agree: free speech is great, as long as I agree with what you are saying and no one gets upset.
So, can we stop calling them “liberals” now?

Funny as this is - I hope we realize just how dangerous and unbalanced the loon left really is.

No question about it.

So why is it that the “right” people (like us) are fine with labeling others who differ from them as loony?
When do our insults of their thinking that they have gained the high ground gain the moral high ground?
Could we just stop lowering ourselves down to “their” level for just one day?
Please?
Hint: this is not how Jesus taught us to treat anyone, even our perceived “enemies.”

And as to the issue portrayed here, I think that the seriousness of it cannot be overstated.
That pro-life is not just a mislabel, even pro-abortion is weak. These people are increasingly coming out of their “closet” as being pro-death. Stridently pro-death.
It’s as though legalizing abortion in our culture has released a once closeted-in compunction to kill. To make a blood sacrifice, even if it’s to no one or for no reason.
Freedom to kill the most innocent, now creeping up into wanting the freedom to kill newborns, has become the freedom to wash ourselves in the blood of the lamb. As though this were the right thing to do.
It is, in short, the expression of the most evil.

So calling people who would violently object to being labeled “stridently pro-death” is OK, but referring to the “loony [short for lunatic, which according to one definition means “somebody considered wildly reckless”] left” is out-of-bounds? Puleese—tone police are not welcome at Stand Firm. Your point in your second comment is right on target, Julia. Stick to the substance, and lets the posters deal with language.

Nazis referred to the Jews as vermin; Hutus called the Tutsis cockroaches. The dehumanizing language “Kill the shrimp” is comparable. May God have mercy on our nation.

Huey Long warned us decades ago that fascism would come to America under the label of antifascism. I think his prediction has become prophecy.

[comment deleted—off topic; we do not allow tone policing at StandFirm as has been made clear in commenting policy and blogger warnings—it simply want be allowed; this is a warning]

RE: “When do our insults of their thinking that they have gained the high ground gain the moral high ground?”
Hi Julia Marks—StandFirm is very comfortable, and has been since its founding, with insulting the faulty thinking of revisionist activists. We’re going to continue right along with labeling that thinking, using negative and critical language, as we find the time and labels. We are also very comfortable with labels—they are great ways to classify human behavior and thinking. The helpful thing about David’s label of “Loony Left” is that it distinguishes between simply “the Left”—which don’t all act as this woman did—and the Loony Left, which do.
You’re very welcome to comment here, although all commenters are required to adhere to the commenting protocols of which everyone is repeatedly reminded through the days, weeks, months, and years of blogging here. This is no surprise to you, I expect, since you have been registered since 2006 and since we’ve been clear for years now that we don’t allow “tone policing” as it is both off-topic and attempts to take over the role of the bloggers, which commenters are not. If you have a problem with something that a blogger says, feel free to use the Private Messaging system to let them know the details.
On the other hand, we understand that StandFirm is not for everyone. There are plenty of conservative to moderate blogs where I don’t read or comment, simply because I don’t wish to adhere to their commenting standards and don’t like their tone. So we have no expectations that everybody who is on the traditional or conservative side of the fence will find StandFirm a fun place to read and comment.

I do not call them liberals, because they are not. I call them “progressives” - using quote marks to indicate that is what they call themselves in many cases - but they are not really for progress.

I’d like to make an editorial note to my comment above (#1):
I did NOT find the billlboard “funny.” That was pretty disgusting. My initial reaction to Ms. Eltahawy was humorous as I thought she was being foolish. I kept watching the video trying to see what offended her. But the more I think about it, she was not foolish at all. The words angry, vitriolic and off-balance started coming to mind. I realize that her attack on the other woman is frightening.
But this is the “progressive Left” in its real element. Speech or expression is only as free as Ms. Mona “Judge & Jury” Eltahawy wants it to be. Rather than spending her own money for a counter ad, all she needs is a can of spray paint. Defacing public and private property and assault on an individual are perfectly justified if she is offended. Children, that may be acceptible where she came from but what she is displaying is anarchy, not democracy.

JuliaMarks - while I agree with you to some degree that “name calling” can get out of hand, and sometimes inadvertantly gives the “other side” some fodder, your last statement, ‘Hint: this is not how Jesus taught us to treat anyone, even our perceived “enemies.”’ is not entirely accurate….
My personal favorite name-calling that Jesus spoke was “brood of vipers”. Tough one to top…even better than “looney”.
Jesus called ‘em like He saw ‘em, and that’s good enough for me.

BTW, here is the message that Ms. Eltahawy found so offensive:

As David and Sara have already made clear, the *tone police* are not real big here. That is one thing ( among many) that I like about Stand Firm. B. hunter- Excellent point about Jesus using “brood of vipers” to call out his enemies.
I don’t see why the original billboard was found to be so offensive. Are these loony left against married black men having children while married and expressing their joy over being fathers?
I suggest “regressives” as the best term but loony left really captures the spirit some time.
PS. Anyone else note the wedding band on the father’s left hand? Nice subtle touch… not just any black man but a *married* black man.
