This Year’s Chutzpah Award Goes To…
...the Obama campaign, for a letter that it is using in advertising. The Washington Examiner reports:
The Obama-Biden campaign’s web page featured a “letter of the week” from a 25-year-old woman who wrote that “I am one of the 47% of Americans who fall under Mitt Romney’s definition of ‘entitled’ and ‘unable to take responsibility for my life.’ I have Down syndrome.”
The letter comes on the heel of the campaign’s TV ad playing in battleground states that uses the audio of Romney dismissing efforts to win over 47 percent of voters dedicated to Obama because they receive some kind of government assistance. While the Romney campaign said the context is about the election and not how he will approach the nation as president, the Obama campaign has made the case that Romney won’t look out for those who need help.
Enter “Brittany” and her letter. In it, she said that she is a registered Democrat, and on assistance, which she said makes her part of Obama’s 47 percent.
“My mother applied for Social Security’s Supplemental Security Income program (SSI) for me when I was 19. I really want to make lots of money and have a hot tub someday, but SSI subtracts my paychecks from my SSI benefits, so I don’t have much to put into a savings account,” she wrote.
“I am now working for a store, folding clothes and doing returns. I like my job a lot! I make $4.98 an hour and I am allowed to work 25-30 hours a week (I have paid $542.72 in federal, FICA, state, and city taxes this year as of August 31st),” she added in a knock at Romney’s other comment that many of Obama’s supporters don’t pay taxes.
So here’s where the chutzpah comes in: under the abortion regime defended with fanatical frenzy by the president and his supporters, there was a 9-in-10 chance that Brittany would never have had the opportunity to write her letter, because 90% of all preborn children diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome are aborted. She is one of the blessed few who get to live a life where they can dream of having a hot tub. One wonders if anyone has explained this to her, and if she’d still be supporting Obama if anyone did.

I’m pretty certain that the letter writer isn’t one of the people Romney’s comment was aimed at. I feel fairly confident that Romney was talking about the “Obama Phone” lady.

And the girl who tells her mother (!) she needs to spend $18,000 a year (!!) on birth control.

David Fischler this is the meanest post I’ve read in a long time.
It’s just mean.
Divisive.
Ugly.
Hateful.
Divisive.
And mean.
I am shocked and appalled at how mean you are.

How about the White House’s telling federal contractors to not give notice to employees - about 200,000 worker - about to be laid off due to coming budget cuts, as they are required to under federal law? The WH said it will grant waivers to those companies who would normally be fined for such a practice. Didn’t want 200,000 people with looming pink slips just before an election, you know…

Based on the information given this person would be receiving approx. $417.00 a month SSI after deductions for her wages if we assume she is eligible for the maximum amount of $698.00 per month in SSI. This in addition to an appx. monthly wage of $648.00. This being the case her own income is more than her SSI benefits so why would she or anyone else consider herself as being one of the so called 47%?
I never took Romney to be speaking about those on Social Security or SSI or SSDI.

Paula and Another Pilgrim: I’m certain you’re correct.
Sarah: Thank you. Coming from you, that’s an enormous compliment.

So. Who wrote Brittany’s letter for her? This is higher order reasoning than I have ever encountered among the Down’s Syndrome people I have worked with in the past. I’m not doubting the truth of the story…just wondering who wrote the letter over her name.

That’s a good question, Frances. I wondered the same thing.

#8 and 9—The actual letter says “My mom and her friend helped me write this.” I assume her Mom’s “friend” by coincidence just happens to be a copywriter for the Obama Campaign.

#10 Thanks for clearing up the authorship for me.
