Freedom of Speech - So Yesterday

“Freedom of speech means you have to allow idiots to speak, and that’s the unfortunate thing.”

We understand completely.  For instance - it is exactly how we feel about almost every overpaid actor in Hollywood.

The First Amendment conflates freedom of speech with respect for religion.  The same amendment that protects the right of Muslims to practice their religion is the same one that protects rights to speak against Islam.  It would appear that it’s “unfortunate,” that someone whose livelihood depends on free speech, doesn’t know much about the First Amendment.

Clooney is angry about a comically-bad 14-minute film trailer posted on Youtube?  Is he as vexed about every other cinematic release that doesn’t meet his standards of excellence?  (And, for the record, I think Clooney is a very good actor and I enjoy most of his movies).

Part of the enjoyment of theatrical performances calls for the character being played to be PRIMARY in the minds of those watching.  When the character and actions of the actor/actress are dominant in the viewer’s mind, that overrides the character’s personality, and cuts the enjoyment.  There are many fine actors and other theatrical people whose personal peccadillos have so transcended any character they might play, that I don’t watch what they do any more.

I wonder what George Clooney would say if somebody called for censoring his work.

Silly Wabbit.  The elite aren’t subject to their own edicts.

FWIW .. I think George was saying basically:

Freedom of Speech means that anyone has the right to say what he or she wants (except yelling fire in a crowded theater).

Unfortunately, that covers the dude who created that strange film.
