Questions, Questions

Trevin Wax at the Gospel Coalition notes that while the media loves to ask hard questions of pro-life political candidates, there are lots of questions that never get asked of pro-choicers that would make them squirm and then some. His entire list deserves reproduction (pardon the pun):

1. You say you support a woman’s right to make her own reproductive choices in regards to abortion and contraception. Are there any restrictions you would approve of?

2. In 2010, The Economist featured a cover story on “the war on girls” and the growth of “gendercide” in the world – abortion based solely on the sex of the baby. Does this phenomenon pose a problem for you or do you believe in the absolute right of a woman to terminate a pregnancy because the unborn fetus is female?

3. In many states, a teenager can have an abortion without her parents’ consent or knowledge but cannot get an aspirin from the school nurse without parental authorization. Do you support any restrictions or parental notification regarding abortion access for minors?

4. If you do not believe that human life begins at conception, when do you believe it begins? At what stage of development should an unborn child have human rights?

5. Currently, when genetic testing reveals an unborn child has Down Syndrome, most women choose to abort. How do you answer the charge that this phenomenon resembles the “eugenics” movement a century ago – the slow, but deliberate “weeding out” of those our society would deem “unfit” to live?

6. Do you believe an employer should be forced to violate his or her religious conscience by providing access to abortifacient drugs and contraception to employees?

7. Alveda King, niece of Martin Luther King, Jr. has said that “abortion is the white supremacist’s best friend,” pointing to the fact that Black and Latinos represent 25% of our population but account for 59% of all abortions. How do you respond to the charge that the majority of abortion clinics are found in inner-city areas with large numbers of minorities?

8. You describe abortion as a “tragic choice.” If abortion is not morally objectionable, then why is it tragic? Does this mean there is something about abortion that is different than other standard surgical procedures?

9. Do you believe abortion should be legal once the unborn fetus is viable – able to survive outside the womb?

10. If a pregnant woman and her unborn child are murdered, do you believe the criminal should face two counts of murder and serve a harsher sentence?

Personally, I’d love to see Barack Obama (or any of a number of pro-choice Republicans I can think of) have to answer even one of those.

I almost suspect just trying to ask one or more of those questions of a liberal would be labelled as part of the “war on women” and in the mind of the liberal would show how hateful you were toward women.

Certainly you would not get the truthful answer because by definition, in asking a liberal these questions, you are asking this of someone who is programmed to lie:  liberals have to lie because no sensible person would buy what they are selling otherwise.

I have asked many of these questions of people I know are in favor of abortion.  What it usually boils down to is there should be no restrictions at all because either, the fetus is not a person until it is born and therefore has no rights or any restriction at all is a war on women’s right to choose.  To get a better idea of what we are up against in making people understand our argument I offer you these quotes from a discussion on abortion I participated in.

“You are NOT part of the family until you are BORN! A human zygote, embryo or fetus is NOT the same as a human being.”

“So what gives a fetus the right to use someone’s body to keep them alive without permission?  What gives a fetus that unique right that no one else has?”

“Second point—the uterus is part of a woman’s body.  It does not belong to anyone else.  A human being’s own body parts belong to that person.  No one else gets to use it without permission—or that would be the definition of rape”

” We know how to use antibiotics to save ourselves from suffering nature’s bacteria that could kill us.  And we know how to save ourselves from the side effect of pregnancy when we don’t want to suffer it. “

This is on why some want to restrict abortions, ” It is the Patriarchies way of keeping women in control and keeping control of the breeding process, a process men have no control over.”

This was in response to a post that an embryo is alive, “Plants are alive, bacteria are alive, etc.  So what?”

“Any unwanted growth in my body is a tumor, and should be removed.”

And my very favorite palm to head smacking statement of the day was this,

“MY LIFE started when my mother gave BIRTH to me - when I separated from her and left her body. Until that occured, I was just a dream she was growing… an idea of a life that MIGHT be… I’m grateful she dreamed of me and that her dream came true, but I surely wasn’t the only dream she ever had. Some ideas remain dreams; others attain a life of their own.”

The above quotes show why your questions will never be given fair consideration.  On top of that most pro abortion people regard any restriction on abortion as a wholesale onslaught upon “the right to choose.”  This includes restrictions based on the likely viability of the fetus outside the womb.

This discussion also degenerated into a bash the Church festival quite early on.

While on the subject of abortion, would everyone please offer prayers for a woman I know who has chosen life even though she does favor abortion.  The circumstances are such that I know it took a lot of soul searching for her to make this choice.  So prayers would be very welcome.

What gives anyone the right to destroy what God has created?

Paula, I have heard much the same;

This was in response to a post that an embryo is alive, “Plants are alive, bacteria are alive, etc.  So what?”

The Gospel of Luke tells us [Lk. 1:39] “At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth.  When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.”

The baby [what we call a fetus] leaped for joy when the mother [Elizabeth] heard Mary’s greeting.  This all caused Elizabeth to be filled with God [the Holy Spirit].

That does not happen plants and bacteria.

Of course, if they reject the Gospel of Luke [and so many do] then it is really in God’s hand.  We may reach them by the power of God or they may meet Him later on their own.

No one has ever asked President Obama why he voted twice against a bill which would have required medical care to a child who had survived a botched abortion. He should be made to answer for this.

I am certainly not a “one issue” voter.  However, the candidate’s view on abortion speaks volumes about the CHARACTER of the candidate.

We got what we deserved in Obama.  If you recall - he doesn’t want his daughters being “punished” by becoming pregnant just because they are having sex…nevermind that pregnancy is a natural consequence of said act.

And…how can ANYONE with a conscience leave a baby in a closet to die after a botched abortoin?  And he spoke and voted FOR this twice.  Disgusting.

Frankly, the Obama’s live on a different planet from me and my family…

[2] I’ve heard many of those before.  The speaker is typically resolute in the rectitude of their unsupported conclusion.  (The speaker is often unable to continue in the face of simple query: “you may believe that, but on what basis do you think it to be universally true?”)

Two alternative angles I’ve been reflecting on, one of which is not my own:

1.  Why is an undesired fetus simply tissue, while a desired fetus is a baby?

2.  Roe v. Wade boils down to a court-made rule as to when a fetus shall be considered a person recognized by the state.  Yet that opinion was not a convincing outcome, as the debate continues to this day about when life begins.  If one side in the debate is incorrect, which side risks causing the most harm by being wrong?  A pro-life outcome risks the burden of undesired pregnancies, while a pro-choice outcome risks the death of many.

Here’s a question I would like to ask of pro-choice people who self-identify as Christian and believe their bodies are their own.  How would you respond to what C.S. Lewis says through a character in the Screwtape Letters?

Screwtape wrote, “Much of the modern resistance to chastity comes from men’s belief that they “own” their bodies – those vast and perilous estates, pulsating with the energy that made the worlds, in which they find themselves without their consent and from which they are ejected at the pleasure of Another! . . . . And all the time the joke is that the word “mine” in its full possessive sense cannot be uttered by a human being about anything.  In the long run either Our Father [ie the devil – remember who is speaking here] or the Enemy [ie God] will say “mine” of each thing that exists, and specially of each man.  They will find out in the end, never fear, to whom their time, their souls, and their bodies really belong – certainly not to them whatever happens.”  Screwtape Letters, Letter 21

These questions also will not be asked at any “town hall meetings” either.

I’l preface my question with a statement that I believe that the vast majority of abortions are essentially voluntary.  Not rape/incest/health.  Also don’t buy the “prophylactic broke.”

So…Woman A chooses to be sexually active regardless of her financial or other life circumstances…

She chooses not to take appropriate precautions for herself, parter, or both…

She chooses not to give the child up for adoption…

She chooses not to raise the child…

There may be some other (non) choices made…

So, if she’s not able to make these choices in the affirmative, why “must” she have the “choice” to end the life of her child?

We know how to use antibiotics to save ourselves from suffering nature’s bacteria that could kill us.  And we know how to save ourselves from the side effect of pregnancy when we don’t want to suffer it. “

The side effect of pregnancy?  “SIDE EFFECT”????  what does this person think pregnancy is FOR?

(My caps aren’t high volume, but high amazement.)
